Next time you feel he’s just trying not to be involved, here are a few strategies that would make him confess.
Catch him off guard: The more relaxed he feels to be around you the more he’s bound to blab. Just try to give him his space. If he’s busy surfing television channels, do not interrupt his “concentration” to ask him if he has done something you asked him to do or not? You can create a casual setting by sitting a little away from him so that he knows he has space defined. Start a general conversation but in a relation to what you want to ask him about. It should seem more like a conversation than an interrogation.
Do not accuse him: Now is not the time to be judgmental. Don’t get into the role-play mode of a court room, where he’s the criminal and you the judge, and you are about to give him the sentence for the crime he has committed!! Say these five magic words: "Is there any reason why..." and complete the sentence by describing how you think he may be deceiving you. Staying silent and subtle ups the pressure without making him feel cornered.
You have to make him feel safe: Let him know you won't punish him for telling the truth and he'll be less likely to lie in the first place. When he confesses, find a way to cool off — hang out with friends or go shopping — then talk about how you can make your relationship more open. Appreciate him being honest to you, and tell him that is exactly what you admire about him.
As a result, he's more likely to own up in the future.
