1. Ask her what she wants to drink: a date may not necessarily be in a conventional candlelight setting with music playing in the background. It could happen anywhere, even on a chai ki tapri or your office canteen. But if she is okay with wine or any other hard drink, indulge her!

2Gift right: if you have just met the woman, then buying expensive gifts or chocolates may not be such a good idea. Instead, just carry a good smile on your face; that will be more than any kind of gift.

Choose good places to hang out: if you really want to go somewhere, then think of places which will help you stimulate conversation, such as museums, bowling alleys, comedy shows, the zoo, an art show, or the planetarium. Avoid going for a movie since both of you will not be able to talk and the date will end before it began.

4. Wear comfy clothing: the selection of the clothes you wear may actually influence your behaviour to some extent. The point is to wear clothes that make you feel comfortable so that you have a smooth conversation. If you go overboard with your clothes and wear something really flashy to impress your girl, you are on the wrong road and might just end up looking as if you arrived for a job interview.

5. Keep the conversation friendly: treat her as a friend you are meeting for the first time, without any expectations. Don't get too personal and seek information about her family or past relationships because she won’t like it and could think that you are getting too intrusive.

6. Listen to her: you can’t just ask a bunch of questions and then not listen to the answers. Women like men who listen intently. If you emailed or talked on the phone beforehand, remember what she told you about herself. If you forget, then she won’t feel so nice about it.

7. Be Mr Polite: always ask your girl her preferences before placing an order and don’t even try to be bossy. Also, don’t stake your claim on the girl on the first date since it’s just an evening out, she’s not your spouse. Remember not to stare at her while talking about sex because your conversation will be heading to a dead end after that.

8. When it comes to paying the bill: if you have asked her out, then you are the one who must foot the bill. Don’t expect to split it unless your girl really, really insists. If she is the one who has asked you out, then you may go dutch.

9. Avoid getting drunk: letting alcohol spoil things for you is not the best idea on your first date. Imagine if your girl has to drop you home because you had too much! She will label you a jerk and may never see your face again.

10. Say a sweet goodbye: don’t harbour any expectations of a mushy conversation on the first day; that will just make you look deprived and desperate. Also, don’t try to get physical or touchy. Instead thank her for coming out and spending time with you and say a nice “till we meet again”.
